The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:
~1910-1920s Barse & Hopkins Rockingham Series Edition

This Barse & Hopkins edition looks to be of the Rockingham Series based on this 1918 catalog from the publisher that is helpfully provided by A Series of Series.

I’ve matched it to that series based on the geometric design of the cover and the catalog’s image example for the series. It says each book has a box but I do not have it.

A more modern note card, not pictured, was tucked into the copy had written on it “Edition 1 (Circa 1920s)”. This seems unfounded with it being in a 1918 catalog. However, the ‘Other Books in Series’ included in this edition seems to be more numerous than the ones called out in the catalog, which could mean that this is a copy of a later run of the series, which grew to have more books within it. And that later run could be in the 1920s…

Or the catalog didn’t list all the books they were publishing under the series.

In any case, the poetry is not the first edition text, it’s either third, fourth, or fifth…I didn’t spend the time determining which.

Anyway, I’ve put it in the ~1910s-1920s range and marked the decade as n.d. as I don’t want to commit to either decade.

The Book Itself

My copy has some wear/tear done to it, needs some glue in the front cover/flyleaf area. When I do repairs, I’ll take pictures of the before/after.

I BELIEVE (emphasis on believe) on one of the blank, dark back pages that there is a stamp for the ‘Unbreakable Back’ which is mentioned in the 1918 catalog. The letters are so blury that it might just be my mind reading into it what I can from what I know.

Apologies for the gloved finger in many photos holding the page down.
